The 7th Edition of The Penang Island Jazz Festival will be held from the 2nd to 5th of December 2010. The Main feature of the Festival - the outdoor "Jazz By The Beach" (Main Stage) will be at the Bayview Beach Resort Gardens on the 4th & 5th of December starting from 6.30pm to 11pm featuring five (5) acts (local and international) per night.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - – American photographer Herman Leonard, whose smoky black-and-white pictures immortalized jazz stars between the 1940s and 1960s, died this weekend aged 87, his spokesman said in a statement. Born in 1923 in the US state of Pennsylvania to Romanian parents, Leonard obtained a degree in photography shortly after World War Two, and opened his first photography studio in New York in 1948.

NEW YORK - Jazz singer Abbey Lincoln, whose career spanned six decades and included acting, composing and participation in the U.S. civil rights movement, died on Saturday at age 80, The New York Times reported. Lincoln, who was often said to have been strongly influenced by famed jazz singer Billie Holiday, died at her Manhattan apartment, the Times said, citing her brother David Wooldridge.

KuDeTa comes for its 10th Anniversary Celebration with a special treat. They invited one of the most successful acid-jazz/UK funk groups of all time, The Brand New Heavies. After having a rotating roster of lead vocalists such as Jay Ella Ruth, Siedah Garrett, Carleen Anderson, Nicole Russo, the second featured vocalist, who the band enjoyed the most success with, N'Dea Davenport returned to The Heavies in fall of 2005.

British jazz drummer Jack Parnell, who served as bandleader on The Muppet Show, has died aged 87, his family says. Parnell died on Sunday at his home in Southwold, eastern England, following a year-long battle with cancer.

It is the first film festival, that classifies music videos as a an independent art form. Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu is scheduled to open the annual Sanur Village Festival today. The highlight of the festival's opening is expected to be the launch of the recently renovated Sindu traditional market. "The Sindu market marks the revitalization of traditional markets in Bali, "said festival organizer IB Gede Sidhartha Putra. The renovation of the market cost an estimated Rp 4 billion (US$448,000).

Bad news for jazzfans in Jakarta. After three year's of sizzling jazz nights, Jakarta's leading jamsession at Eastern Promise is taking a break. Like in previous year's during the holy month the regular jazznight in EP's outdoor live music garden stops. Manager Lens ter Wee running this unique live music spot in Jakarta also complained about decreasing sales and audience, and sagging interest of the participating musicians during the jazznight.

Al Jarreau left a French hospital on Sunday after a week of treatment for breathing and heart problems that struck as he prepared to go on stage, his doctor said. "We have talked through his treatment and given him advice to adapt his lifestyle," Jean-Louis Bonnet, a doctor in the cardiology department of the hospital in the southern city of Marseille, told AFP. "We found the cause of the passing problem which was partly linked to fatigue," Bonnet said, adding that treatment had stabilised an irregular heart beat.

Veteran US singer Al Jarreau was in a "critical" condition Friday in a French hospital where he was taken after falling ill just before he was due to go on stage, health officials said. Jarreau, 70, who has won seven Grammy awards, was about to begin a festival concert late Thursday in the southern Alpine town of Barcelonette when he was taken ill with an unduly rapid heart beat, they said. Herb Ellis, considered to be one of the great jazz guitar soloists, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 88. The musician, who had Alzheimer's disease, died at his home, his son told the Los Angeles Times. Ellis, whose career spanned six decades, performed with what is regarded as the classic line-up of the acclaimed Oscar Peterson Trio. He also worked with jazz greats including Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Dorsey and Louis Armstrong.

Jazz, unlike rock and roll, is not the type of music to die for. It is very unlikely jazz will ever draw serious devotion and adulation from its fans. In fact, it is almost improbable a cult will form around trumpet player Wynton Marsalis or jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour. For the first time in Asia, world famous visiting artist Theos M.B.Sijrier will be painting a 6 x 2 m canvass to the tunes of live music of the Moko Blues Band. The painting will then be divided into smaller pieces which will be signed and sold on the night. The proceeds from the sales will go towards the disabled children’s unit which is being built at the Sunrise school in Kerobokan.

The first edition of Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Gene Pistilli, Tim Hauser, Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, and Pat Rosalia, splitting after one album. Hauser reformed the band in 1972 and, with Janis Siegel, Laurel Masse, and Alan Paul, established the group in New York, playing several club dates.
